Overview

King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow is one of India’s most prestigious government medical universities, officially recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), Dental Council of India (DCI) and Indian Nursing Council (INC). Founded in 1905 and granted university status in 2004, KGMU is the flagship medical institution of Uttar Pradesh, celebrated for its century-old legacy of clinical excellence, affordable education and outstanding patient care through its 4,500+ bed teaching hospital.
KGMU is home to 58 departments spread across four faculties — Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Nursing and Paramedical Sciences — offering MBBS, BDS, B.Sc Nursing, MD, MS, MDS, MHA, M.Sc, PG Diplomas, DM, M.Ch and Ph.D. programmes. In the NIRF 2025 rankings, the university achieved an impressive 8th rank in the Medical category (jumping from 19th in 2024), 7th in Dental, 50th among universities and 83rd overall, while India Today also ranks it among India’s top 10 medical institutions. Admission to all courses is through national entrance exams including NEET-UG, NEET-PG, NEET-SS and university-level tests.
What makes KGMU a dream destination for medical aspirants is its unbeatable combination of elite academics and remarkably low government fees — the total MBBS tuition is barely over ₹1.5 lakh for the entire course, among the lowest in India for an institution of this stature. Students benefit from massive clinical exposure at one of Asia’s largest patient-inflow hospitals, a highly experienced faculty, modern research facilities and a vibrant campus in the heart of Lucknow. With 15 affiliated medical colleges and 7 nursing colleges under its umbrella, KGMU continues to shape some of the finest doctors, dentists, nurses and health professionals in the country, backed by strong placement outcomes and a median package of ₹12 LPA for its graduates.
