Overview

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh is a NAAC ‘A+’ accredited public central university and an Institute of National Importance, recognised by the UGC and a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Founded in 1875 as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and elevated to a university in 1920, AMU is one of India’s oldest, largest and most respected institutions of higher learning, serving over 28,000 students across 12 faculties and 300+ courses in traditional, modern, technical and professional streams.
AMU’s academic strengths span law, medicine, engineering, humanities, sciences, management, Unani medicine and social sciences. In the NIRF 2025 rankings, the university was placed 19th Overall and 10th among all Indian universities, while its Faculty of Law ranked an impressive 9th in the country. It also features in the QS World University Rankings 1001–1200 band (2025) and holds the 6th position in the IIRF 2026 University Rankings. Flagship institutions on campus include the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College, Zakir Husain College of Engineering & Technology, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, the Women’s College and the renowned Faculty of Law.
Beyond the iconic 1,100+ acre main campus in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, AMU operates three off-campus centres at Malappuram (Kerala), Murshidabad (West Bengal) and Kishanganj (Bihar), extending quality affordable education to educationally backward regions. The university is celebrated for its remarkably low fee structure, extensive hostel system, Maulana Azad Library, rich student culture and one of India’s strongest alumni networks.
Admissions are primarily through the university’s own entrance examinations (AMUEEE and departmental tests), while MBBS, BDS and BUMS seats are filled through NEET. The Training and Placement Office connects students with recruiters such as TCS, Wipro, Infosys, IBM, HDFC Bank, ONGC and leading law firms and judiciaries. With its rare combination of heritage, national-level rankings, affordable education and multi-disciplinary depth, AMU remains a top choice for students from across India and abroad.
