Birla Institute of Applied Sciences

Birla Institute of Applied Sciences (BIAS), Bhimtal is an AICTE-approved technical institute established in 1969 by the Birla family, located in the scenic Kumaun hills near Lake Bhimtal in Nainital district, Uttarakhand. The institute is affiliated with Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU), Dehradun and was formerly affiliated with Kumaun University, Nainital. Known as the sister institute of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (Ranchi), BIAS Bhimtal has built a strong reputation for quality education in Computer Science, Electronics & Communication, and Computer Applications at affordable fee levels.

The institute offers B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (intake 180) and Electronics & Communication Engineering (intake 30), along with lateral entry options, a BCA programme (intake 60, introduced in 2024), and an MCA programme (intake 30). UG admissions are conducted through JEE Main scores via UTU counselling, while PG admissions are based on graduation merit and entrance criteria set by the affiliating university. With a total seat intake of around 240–300 students, the institute maintains a focused, low student-to-faculty ratio that encourages personalised learning and mentoring.

The fully residential 20-acre Wi-Fi-enabled campus houses well-equipped computer, networking, DSP, communication, and programming laboratories, a stocked library, separate boys’ and girls’ hostels accommodating around 500 students, a dispensary with ambulance facility, sports grounds, and active student societies including the Cultural Society, Literary Society, Sports Society, Google Developers Club, and Technoforum Club. An MoU with NASSCOM has brought a digital lab to campus, promoting computer literacy in surrounding rural and semi-urban communities.

BIAS Bhimtal runs a dedicated Training and Placement Cell that regularly conducts campus drives, with recruiters such as TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, Capgemini, HCL, and Lenskart visiting the campus. In the 2021–22 cycle the institute recorded roughly 90% placements for B.Tech and 85% for MCA students, and its alumni have gone on to work at global technology leaders including Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Samsung, Texas Instruments, and Nutanix. Situated just 19 km from Kathgodam railway station at an altitude of 1,370 metres, the green, pollution-free campus offers an ideal environment for focused academic pursuit.
