Overview


Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), Gangtok is a NAAC A+ accredited, UGC recognised state private university established in 1995, and holds the distinction of being India’s first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative in higher education and healthcare. Approved by AICTE and recognised by the NMC, Indian Nursing Council and other statutory bodies, SMU has built a strong reputation for delivering quality education in engineering, medical and health sciences, management, and applied sciences.
The university operates through two picturesque campuses – the Technology Campus at Majitar, Rangpo, home to the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), and the Medical Campus at Tadong, Gangtok, which houses the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing, and the College of Physiotherapy. Nestled in the Himalayan foothills, both campuses offer modern infrastructure, smart classrooms, advanced laboratories, well-stocked libraries, hostels, sports facilities, and a vibrant student community.
SMU offers a wide spectrum of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs including BTech, BCA, BBA, BSc, MBBS, BPT, BSc Nursing, MBA, MCA, MTech, MPT, MHA, MD/MS and PhD programs. Admissions are based on national-level entrance exams such as JEE Main, MET, NEET, CAT and MAT, along with university-level entrance tests. The university is consistently ranked among India’s top institutions, holding a place in the NIRF 101–150 university band and featuring prominently in India Today, Outlook-ICARE and CSR-GHRDC rankings.
With a strong Training & Placement cell, SMU has an impressive placement record, with recruiters such as Microsoft, Amazon, Dell, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and PwC visiting the campus.
